Now entering its fourth year, the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair, which takes place from 20 to 23 October, provides a unique shopping experience in the heart of Manchester.

Taking place at Spinningfields, just off Deansgate, the fair gives visitors an excellent opportunity to see and buy the latest work in jewellery, interior textiles, fashion accessories, glass, ceramics, wood and paper. It’s a chance to buy beautiful accessories and gifts as well as functional items for the home direct from 140 inspiring designer-makers.

‘Highly Commended’ at the Manchester Tourism Awards 2010, the event is filled with new and established makers and also plays host to the best emerging new talent from across the north. Expect to see work from the functional to the purely aesthetic.

ONES TO WATCH

Emerging makers to look out for this year include Yu-Ping Lin, with her hand painted, pleated neckpieces and fresh from this year’s Collect, Katherine Richmond, whose work explores the fragile relationship between people and objects.

Visitors can spend the day in a stimulating yet relaxing atmosphere, chat to the makers and find out the story behind each unique piece. As we move away from excess and mass production, this event is about finding something to love and buying it direct from the person who made it.
