Still wondering what to do with the Jubilee weekend? Let’s face it there is no end of amazing events on in Manchester. You have any number of street parties to wave your flag at. Nothing, however, is going to be quite as interesting as what Islington Mill has in store.
Following their Friday night show with Kuedo and Laurel Halo, on Saturday 3rd June, Islington Mill welcome you to the world of Great Kitten where everyone is a ruler and is crowned King/Queen upon arrival as they take an oath upon the disco orb.
This will be followed by no less than mass coronation ceremonies, participatory rituals, flash mob processions, royal banquet pinatas, disco cave v3, dressing up & dance floor explosions. Yes you read that right. Islington Mill certainly intends to celebrate Liz’s diamond jubilee in style.
Throughout the day these royally suitable feats will be performed by: Volkov Commanders, Organ Freeman, Sex Hands, Pumping Iron and Lucy Ironmonger. Alongside this artistically fantastic rabble will be Mill favourites Eggs Collective. They will be doing several performances throughout the day dotted around the building and after their Halloween night at the mill last year this can only be a good thing as they have been working in Islington Mill for a few weeks now in preparation for the big Jubilee day itself.
All these alternative and unusual events, all in the name of Lizzie, culminate in a right royal party, courtesy of Islington Mill’s disco deviants in residency for the season CHERYL whose work has been featured through various installations and events in the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA PS1, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Brooklyn Museum.
The four-piece performance collective from New York have been working with many artists, musicians, performance groups and members of the public to create a site specific installation throughout their time at the Mill. All relating and revolving around the theme of ritual that we Brits have with our Royal Family, this will be their take on a great British Day Out.

But let’s not forget this is a party, a celebration, and would be nothing without a stellar line up of DJs. So Islington Mill have gathered as many as possible together all under two rooms: Chew Disco, Bollox, Trash-o-Rama, Raw Like Sissy, Good Afternoon, Northern Crosses, Brutal Ruth keeping the 2 room party going into the early hours. On top of that, DJ Jorge Vieira will also be making his Manchester debut, all the way from Lisbon, Portugal.
If you happen to find the events all a bit much, and need to nourish yourself with more than right royal randomness, the mill will have food on offer in the form of the Queen Cafe. In a similar vein to their ‘Candle in the Wind’ cafe at the Royal Wedding last year we shall be playing Queen songs all day and serving up a selection of delights, including Diamond Jubilee Chicken.
This event keeps growing so expect so much more on the day as well. To keep up to date find the Facebook event where they keep adding snippets of what is going to happen. Their advice for the event is this: Get down early and be prepared to get messy, CHERYL style.
