It’s an unashamedly star spangled start to 2016 as the BBC Philharmonic lays on an American feast with Conductor John Wilson at The Bridgewater Hall on 16 January at 7.30pm.
John Wilson and the BBC Philharmonic’s partnership is relatively new. Now recording two Copland discs with Chandos records (due for release in 2016), expect a sneak preview of their on-stage chemistry in this thrilling programme.
Some of America’s greatest composers take centre stage, as Wilson focuses on Charles Ives, Philip Glass, Copland and Korngold in the BBC Philharmonic’s exploration of the American giants.
Jonathan Scott will raise the curtain on the evening with Ives’ iconoclastic work for solo organ – Variations on ‘America’, followed by Philip Glass’ tribute to the Dalai Lama ‘Mad Rush’. Copland’s Organ Symphony will round off the first half of the programme, then after the interval Wilson will lead Copland’s tribute to American hero Billy the Kid, followed by Korngold’s swashbuckling suite The Adventures of Robin Hood.
The British conductor John Wilson has made a name for himself at the BBC Proms for bringing the glitz and glamour of old time stage and screen to London’s Royal Albert Hall. Recent celebrations of Bernstein, Sinatra and movie classics have been rip roaring successes. His exciting new recording partnership with the BBC Philharmonic sees him exploring more great American repertoire.
