Manchester photographer, man on the gigging scene, Shay Rowan shares his thoughts and images about the recent Lindi Ortega gig.

Lindi Ortega graced our shores almost exactly a year ago as she played a series of solo shows in support of her much acclaimed album “Little Red Boots” and in conversation with her at the time it became apparent that it had taken a lot of self belief and determination to get her to that point by refusing to be channeled towards styles of music that were being pushed her way and instead believing that she could make an impression in the world of her beloved country music.

Tonight this Toronto born artist, who made the move to Nashville to soak up the essence of country music in it’s spiritual home, makes her Manchester return at the Soup Kitchen where she combines the lighter, quirky side of her music – “Angels” and “Use Me” from “Little Red Boots” with tracks from her latest album “Cigarettes and Truckstops” with it’s standout track “Heaven Has No Vacancy” a show highlight – her eyes flashing passionately from beneath her customary black lace veil as she dispenses it’s accusational lyrics.

With the addition of an extremely talented guitarist who also provides some sweet harmonies to embellish her sound she has moved up another gear and the power and conviction in her delivery is even more impressive than ever before.

No Lindi Ortega performance is ever complete without her tributes to those that have influenced her most from Janis Joplin to probably her greatest influence Johnny Cash and these are no mere covers but genuinely heartfelt dedications.

Sticking by her early principles proved to be a brave and successful decision and there is so much more to come from this new shining light of country music.
