Is winter over yet? It may not officially be the start of spring till much later in the month, but once the shackles of February are cast behind, the horizon looks an awful lot brighter. March itself brings five action-packed weekends at Sankeys primed for action including a four day cracker across the Easter bank holiday seasonal fun. As this double showcase typifies, Sankeys aims to kick-start March with one heck of a bang.

AME

Friday sees one of the current unstoppable forces in dance music make his way to Ancoats; Nicky Romero. The undoubted success story of last year’s DJMag Top 100 poll, Nicky smashed his way into the top ten with an eye-popping sixth position to affirm his status as one of the dominant forces in the world of EDM.

It followed on from a breathtaking few years which has seen the fresh faced Amsterdam figure conquer the States with his feel-good brand of stadium-shaking house music. His current smash ‘I Could Be The One’, produced alongside fellow megastar Avicii, is a hit on radios and dance floors and evidence of a man firmly at the pinnacle of his powers. Sankeys braces itself for a busy one, with The Dutch Rudder, Jason Herd and John Ross in support.

Then a day later the BPMs get deeper and the vibe becomes less immediate and more seductive. Treehouse once again team up with Leeds based promoters La Loop for another delectable instalment of music. They bring in the Teutonic elegance of Ame for a headline slot, their soulful techno, strung out house and world music influences part of a gloriously refined palette which resonates with the widely heralded stamp of quality their Innervisions label represents.

Support comes in the shape of the soulful electronics of Berlin based spinner Jimmy Edgar, his elegant electronics the perfect counterpart to Ame’s mesmerising output. The dark and brooding sonics of Pariah and the tribal beats of Mr G complete the guest count, whilst Us & Them and Angus & Perry stand tall for the resident roster.

The second weekend of March is another genre-bender for Sankeys. With two sound clashes pitting Sankeys’ in house teams with stars from outside the Ancoats walls, it’s a tour de force of bass music on Friday against the metronomic beats of house and techno the day after, ying and yang for a full frontal analysis of the current hot sounds in modern dance music.

Friday witnesses Manchester fiends Yamajam being invited to show Recentes their skirt. Having taken venues over including Sound Control already, they’ve brought the likes of Artful Dodger, George Fitzgerald and Mala to the city, and return to Sankeys with none other than UK garage and breakbeat legend DJ Zinc.

He’ll be joined by a smorgasbord of talent which runs across the full spectrum of the bass music canon. Soulful drum ‘n bass comes courtesy of Danny Byrd, P Money’s dark and twisted Grime sounds will also be in full effect, whilst the dark and scientific genre splicing output of Breakage also makes an appearance. Randomer, Tippa, and vocal duties courtesy of MC LX One finalise proceedings.

One day later and a certain Steve Lawler is back in the building, bringing his VIVa Warriors stable to the party. One of the crowing glories of Sankeys’ triumphant summer in Ibiza last year, Steve’s iconic presence and dark, twisted soundscapes have been a long term Sankeys fixture, a true master of groove. Sankeys and VIVa hotshot Darius Syrossian and Detlef offer their support.

Meanwhile over in Spektrum, Recentes and Take The Whole Cake will be presenting their own unique sounds. UK garage and US house convergence master Huxley is the star act, whilst the similarly vaunted warped sonics from XXXY and Hot Creations’ funk drenched hero wAFF round off a mouth-watering ensemble of guests. Jozef K holds it down for the Sankeys massive, the club’s resident showcasing his own very diligent crate-digging and web-searching sound.
