What an unexpectedly good night.

For the more snobbish amongst us, (i.e. dubstep is dead, who even liked the more commercialised dubstep anyway? etc) even the most reluctant of gig goer would have found it difficult not to at least have a smile on their face after Steve Aoki took to the decks this week at Manchester Academy.

Maybe his dub remix of ‘My Heart Will Go On’ by Celine Dion or bringing up old memories with his version of Imogen Heap’s ‘Hide and Seek’ – or maybe it’s Steve’s remix of the best loved Jason Derulo sample of that song, who can say, but they’re both excellent.

What I definitely can say is that you’ll find it really really hard not to enjoy yourself at a Steve Aoki concert, you can try, but you won’t succeed. There’s just far too much going on not to. Lights, action, the man himself, the more than recipient crowd…I could go on.

He truly lit the place up and the songs went with it. The only slightly unusual part was the 11pm curfew, when it was clear nobody was ready to give up then, Steve especially. And every hair follicle on his head.

As has been stated time and time again, Steve Aoki puts on the kind of show that every hipster the world over loves to hate, but it just works. The non-stop party witnessed on a particularly blustery night in Manchester could have pleased even the most cynical of sneering hipster.
