Taking its name from the Italian for “kick” (and slang for “football”), Calcio! offers plenty of opportunities to show off some silky skills. Opening its doors on Dale Street in 2023, this is way more than a bar – although it also does a good job at that. This is a place to come and test strength, mettle, determination, and whether or not you can still make top of the leaderboard at Pacman after all these years. One of a number of dedicated retro arcades in Manchester city centre, our desire to incorporate play on a night out has evidently never been stronger.

This corner spot is about as Northern Quarter-looking as they come, in all ways. Open brickwork on the walls, hardwood flooring, and industrial-edges all add to the ambience, while there’s also a subtle nod to pixels and sprites in some detailing. Once inside, customers will find a whole host of playable machines and titles waiting for someone to dive into, whether you’re looking for PlayStation classics, Nintendo landmarks, racers, beat ‘em ups or football games. And if you’re after something a bit more professional, there’s also live sports being shown here on the regular, including tennis, Premier League, and motor racing.

With so much happening people understandably work up a hunger and thirst, and thankfully Calcio! is ready and waiting to deliver both. On the menu here you’ll find burgers, booze, dogs and sides, with mouthwatering options coming from pop-up patty and bun specialists What’s Your Beef — including incredible meat free creations. The draught and bottled beer lists are extensive, cocktails well made, shots and house pours as they should be. Events-wise, DJ sets are a staple, and there’s also the nice added touch of reshowing classic sporting fixtures, not to mention themed quiz nights. What more do you want?
