Like so many great things in life, Platzki all started with the humble potato. Or rather a Polish potato pancake. Run by run a couple from Poland, and self-confessed “food fanatics”, the pair took the starchy savoury snack and used it as a basis for one of Deansgate’s most unique restaurants. Focused on “honest ingredients” infused with passion and a desire to introduce us to Poland’s incredible cuisine, the menu has gradually developed and evolved into something unarguably contemporary and modern that changes every 6 weeks. Much like the space itself, where the redbrick of Manchester’s industrial heritage meets interior greening and stunning wood detail.

With a focus on small plate-style street food interpretations of classics, think rich flavours and hearty recipes presented in playful and innovative ways. That might be Ogorek, a colourful and zesty combination of smoked salmon, orange segments, cucumber and mustard honey. Or Pomidory, where Isle of Wight tomatoes meet parsley, pesto and capers. Not looking for a starter? Mains of choice at Platzki include the incredible Shabowy pork schnitzel, accompanied by carrots and peas. And the Jelen: venison stew, slow cooked and paired with one of those potato pancakes. Meanwhile, smaller appetites might prefer to look at the Kaczka — a salad of smoked duck, fresh greens, figs and balsamic dressing. On weekends they also serve breakfast from 10am til 1pm.

All that aside, Pierogi, arguably the most famous delicacy to come out of Poland, ever, is available, with the exact choice changing daily and served in dishes five pieces at a time. The drinks menu is paired perfectly for all that, with a range of beers imported straight from the old country alongside wines from Poland and Georgia. An aperitif of golden polish vodka, tonic, bergamot and orange is another welcome addition to your glass, and gives a good idea as to how well thought through things are in both kitchen and bar.
