Altrincham’s food scene has always been impressive. Not only was it a pioneer in transforming indoor markets into modern food halls, it also boasts numerous laid-back dining and drinking venues. Among these, Porta Altrincham stands out as a major success story, along with Sud, which we will touch on later. Originating from Chester’s Michelin-recognised deli and paella bar, Joseph Benjamin (which has since consolidated with its offspring and rebranded as Porta), the brand has broadened its horizons, opening a branch on Chapel Street in Salford.

The concept is uncomplicated: excel at one thing. The tapas menus at Porta Altrincham might be compact, but they’re flawless, which accounts for its dedicated following. Regulars will recommend the albondingdhas de cordero (lamb meatballs), the tenderstem broccoli with romesco sauce, and the grilled wild Atlantic prawns with ajillo (garlic and paprika) dressing. Keep an eye out for the specials board too, featuring treats like cuttlefish with manchego and almond pesto or monkfish a la plancha crowned with crispy jamon Iberìco. To top it all off, enjoy a cool glass of vermut on the rocks with a slice. All Porta locations are walk-in only, ensuring an authentic Spanish tapas bar experience.
