Sale is one of Trafford’s prettiest towns, with abundant parks, canals, nature reserves and a historic centre. The latter has undergone something of a facelift over the past decade or so, and a big part of that has come in the form of new food and drink establishments opening for business. Six years ago, Rack was one of those, and has been serving the people of Manchester and beyond tasty and imaginative sandwiches ever since, among other things.

The story behind the operation, which now runs three locations in the city (the other two being inside the Arndale Market and on Lawrence Street, central Stockport), is inspiring, so let’s start there. First setting up shop as a trailer, and focusing on the region’s many food markets, festivals and other outdoor events, the quality of what the Rack team do ensured that idea rapidly grew into a mini-lunchtime empire. As they put it themselves: “Working in Manchester we always struggled to find fresh sandwiches that got us excited for lunch break and this is why we opened Rack, a sandwich shop that takes classics and gives them a creative twist as well as some of our own creations.”

A worthy cause that has proven incredibly successful, on the menu at Rack Sale customers will find a range of styles available, with every order generously proportioned and filled with high quality ingredients. Examples include the incredible Chicken. — roast chicken, streaky bacon, roast chicken crisps, lettuce, lemon and herb — and the Bhaji. — homemade onion bhaji, lettuce, lime pickle, mango chutney, Bombay mix. Toasted Sourgdoughs , are also available, including Classic Grilled Cheese, with veggie red onion dipping gravy, Welsh rarebit, Reuben and Mediterranean, the latter vegan-friendly, and all highly recommended. Breakfast, meanwhile, means sourdough or brioche cooked options like bacon, egg and smashed avocado, or veggie sausage and egg, and there’s also plenty to say about the cakes too, from blondies to cinnamon buns.
