Winner of 2023’s Nations Curry Award, Best Nepalese Restaurant, among countless other trophies The Great Kathmandu cabinet has no doubt been replaced several times by now. A genuine institution in upmarket West Didsbury, it has occupied a prominent position on tree and trendy bar-eatery lined Burton Road since long before the street was synonymous with hospitality. Opened by Gopal and Jhunu Dangol in 1986 with a mission of bringing the flavours and culture of Nepal to England, it’s longevity speaks volumes about how successful that was.

An expansive menu features many dishes that have grown to become firm favourites since the restaurant opened, both here and across the country. Tandoori chicken, shashlik, and paneer chilli being just some examples. Meanwhile kidney, boti, and reshmi kebabs betray less common items on offer. And that’s literally just for starters. As is often customary, a number of Chef’s Specials add real personality to the choices, including the incredible Mis Mas Makahnwala, Chandane Dry Fry, a Nepalese staple, and Swadilo. The latter being a knuckle of tender lamb meat in special sauce with chickpeas.

Seafood is also big at The Great Kathmandu, so you can expect plenty of choice on both large and small plates. The barbecued mackerel with ginger and capsicum is a real winner, as is the Prawn Bhutan (mushrooms and tomatoes in mild spice). Vegans and vegetarians are also well catered for, as are special events both in the restaurant itself, and off-site for parties and other occasions. Clad in wood, and adorned with photographs reflecting the storied history of the family, team, and various high profile customers that have paid a visit over the years, any meal here comes with a real sense of heritage, and a guarantee of the same quality that has seen people come back time and again, decade after decade.
