They really don’t make them like this anymore. As a venue The Klondyke dates back more than a century. Formally known as the Levenshulme Bowling & Social Club, it was run with a focus on bowls and the green outside until 2004, when the sprawling address was passed to the grandson of the previous owners. Les James has continued to invest in the space ever since, and established it as a bonafide South Manchester institution in the eyes of those who know where to find it.

Situated just off Albert Road, The Klondyke is a hidden gem, but once it’s on your map there’s no chance of forgetting the place. A huge, whitewashed building that screams ‘historic’ from the moment you walk through the door, inside you see just how big the operation can be. Four pool tables and two snooker tables are available to use, alongside darts for those who prefer. This sports area dominates the main part of the club itself, with seating areas around the main attractions. Over at the bar, meanwhile, you’ll find a strong selection of imported and domestic pints, halves, wines, spirits and more, and famously friendly service.

While The Klondyke is known for many things, including its community fireworks display on Bonfire Night, it’s perhaps most commonly associated with specific event takeovers. Regularly used for wedding receptions, birthday parties, office dos and Christmas gatherings, this feeds a busy programme of acoustic, live, and electronic music — we’ve seen everything from Irish bands to heavyweight techno sets, DJ workshops to art exhibitions held within its hallowed walls. Add to this a pop-up food offering out in the huge garden, which is one of the best spots in the area for summer drinking, and you start to understand why this place is such an asset to the local community, and treasured by those who use it.
