News coming out of the pub scene these days isn’t always too positive, which is one of the reasons The Marketside Tavern is so precious. Taking over an empty unit close to Bury’s world famous market in summer 2023, it’s an ale house opening that marries the traditional things we look for (and love) in a free house — a great combination of cask and craft beers to go at — in a contemporary set up. Quickly becoming a firm favourite, thanks in part to the inviting brown woods and greens that dominate the interior, the crew here proudly claim to be running “the best tavern this side of the Irwell”.
Of course, that’s difficult to quantify, but everything at Marketside is certainly done very well indeed. Breweries filling the lines are hand-selected for the quality of what they produce, with barrels brought in from nearby, far and wide. So that means a great choice of local gems and more exotic pints to wet your whistle. There’s also an excellent range of bottles available, which can be carried out and taken home to enjoy at a later time. Three packs are priced at £11, while six will set you back £20. A high standard is guaranteed.
While the drinks themselves should be enough to get anyone down, one of the best things about The Marketside Tavern is its tendency to make offers you can’t refuse. This includes the familiar Pie & Pint combination, which includes house lager and “supreme” German pilsner, and there’s also a weekly round down on all beers. From 5pm until close on Mondays and Tuesdays whatever you order will be reduced to the nearest pound, offering better value for money. All that aside, those behind the bar and in the office have invited a regular record fair and host ongoing open mic nights, adding to the appeal.
