Manchester-based Urban Splash are well known throughout the land for their impressive regeneration projects that create new neighbourhoods and revitalise historic buildings.

Their previous (and award-winning) schemes showcase the very best in contemporary architectural design and in Manchester, newly released images show how they are challenging the conventions of modern city centre living in the unique surroundings of the stunning AVRO building that straddles the line between the Northern Quarter and Ancoats.

The 200-year old Brownsfield Mill is being transformed by Urban Splash into 31 New York style loft apartments to deliver a masterclass in residential design for buyers seeking contemporary style and urban living, without compromising on character.

As a Grade II* listed former mill, Avro is one of the last few remaining building conversions of its kind in the Ancoats and New Islington area. It offers both modern living space and classic Victorian-era design with a unique proposition for residential living space in Manchester – complete with a private, residents only garden.

Images of the interior renovation at Avro have now been released by Urban Splash – here’s what they look like…

Original Windows

Nothing can replicate the inimitable style of the windows of a Victorian-era mill. The size, detailing and timeless shape is a feature that is bespoke to the red brick structures of the city. The classic rectangular and arched windows are essential to retaining the character of the building and bringing 19th century architectural style into each apartment space.

Urban Splash have retained and restored the windows to guarantee each apartment has city views framed within the timeless squares of an Avro original.

Exposed Brick Interiors

The red-brick style of the classic Manchester mill has been replicated across the globe when trying to achieve that much imitated industrial interior. The characteristic red-brick exterior of the former mill has been carried through the internal space with communal areas and individual apartments featuring exposed brick as a central element of the interior design scheme at Avro.

By bringing red-brick walls to the apartments and communal areas, the industrial heritage of the building is perfectly juxtaposed against the more contemporary elements of the scheme. Strikingly modern kitchens and fixtures from Urban Splash stand out perfectly against the industrial features of the main building.

Industrial-era Style

Urban Splash designed the Avro scheme in celebration of the city’s industrial past which meant identifying key features unique to the building and incorporating them into the final design. At Avro, this means the aspirational high ceilings of the mill deliver a home with a difference as selected apartments also feature exposed timber beams for added depth and originality.

By delivering on the detail when it comes to the retained original joists and ceilings, each Avro apartment has an exceptional level of detail, no matter in which direction you look.

With exposed ironwork and intricate attention to detail, an Avro apartment is a rare balance of contemporary design and industrial mill. A home like no other in a building unique to the history of the city of Manchester.
