The recent UK lockdown made access to outdoor space an essential part of any new home search, and so award-winning regeneration specialists Urban Splash have decided to get ahead of the curve at their historic Grade II listed Avro building in Ancoats by unveiling a new residents-only garden oasis.

Nestled within the private confines of the city-based former Victorian Mill, the garden will serve to make the collection of 31 apartments even more desirable to style conscious homeowners, with only a limited number of two-bedroom apartments now remaining for sale (priced from £350,000).

Formerly the home of Manchester aviation firm, A.V.Roe & Co., Urban Splash’s reinterpretation of the former Brownsfield Mill has produced some of Manchester’s largest city centre properties, offering between 829 – 2,600 sq ft of space.

Close to the vibrant neighbourhoods of Ancoats and New Islington, the Avro lofts feature all the classic attributes of a successful mill conversion but with the added attention to detail that comes with a coveted Urban Splash property.

Guy Ackernley, residential director of Urban Splash explains:

“We wanted Avro to speak to the kind of person who values their urban lifestyle but doesn’t want to compromise on their home for the city centre location. As a former mill, Avro is overflowing with character. Our design team worked with the fabric of the building to create both unique and generously-sized loft-style apartments but also homes that could offer so much more to potential buyers.”

The Avro garden will give residents an all-important outdoor space to unwind and enjoy in all weathers with plentiful seating set amidst a mix of hard and soft landscaping. The brief was to create a city centre oasis in the historic grounds of the 19th century mill and the result is a rare and successful addition to urban Manchester life.

Guy continues: “Lockdown came at a time when we experienced one of the sunniest Springs on record which for many urban dwellers, presented somewhat of a dilemma. The city lifestyle is one of style, convenience and easy access to culture and entertainment, but it can often come at the cost of having private outdoor space.

“Across our developments we make green space a priority but at Avro, we have gone one step further to create a city garden against the backdrop of a red-brick, industrial-style building for our residents.

“It is a place to support both solo reflection and social interaction and just adds to the unique character of a building which is exceptional in its style and architectural potential. Every apartment offers the kind of high ceilings, original windows and brickwork that you would expect from this type of conversion but at Avro, they create a home that offers so much more than just a place to live.”
