The number of households that were dog owners in the UK stood at around 22% for many, many years, that was until 2020 when it jumped to 33% – a direct result of the COVID pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

So, with that in mind, and with the current ongoing Metrolink trial to allow dogs onto the network, there’s no better time to examine the city’s hotels that are dog friendly – letting our little four-legged friends get their head down in absolute luxury – just like their owners.

There’s plenty on offer, from grandiose Victorian Grade-II listed buildings to ultra-modern and design-led offerings – all of which your doggy (and you) will absolutely love…

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel

The magnificent Kimpton Clocktower is, you’ll be pleased to know, very dog friendly – allowing pets up to 65lbs in with no additional fee. What’s even better is that they also allow cats in here too! This huge Grade-II listed building has a whopping 270 rooms, all crammed with the best perks, including Nespresso machines and mini-fridges, and your dog will be welcome anywhere in the building, including the rather excellent The Refuge bar and restaurant, as well as the great terrace out the side.

BrewDog DogHouse

Much like Ronseal, this hotel does exactly what it says it does. Being named ‘The DogHouse’ and not allowing dogs to actually stay here would not only be criminal, it’d also be highly confusing for all. Fear not though, because your four-legged friends are more than welcome at this BrewDog hotel, which also features shower beers and even in-room beer taps, alongside the excellent ground floor bar and the rooftop terrace with Taco Hut.

Native

Perched in the upper echelons of the colossal Victorian building housing Ducie Street Warehouse on the ground floor, Native wears its industrial heritage on its sleeve, with nods in every room to the city’s past as the centre of the textile world. Exposed red bricks, steel beams and girders and vaulted brick ceilings are everywhere, deft touches that only lean to accentuate the huge, modern atrium covered in glass and steel. Doggies are more than welcome in this place, able to roam anywhere in the entire building, as well as sleep in the rooms. They even show regular ‘Pawpcorn’ dog-friendly movies in their cinema downstairs!

Whitworth Locke

A seamless blend of hotel and aparthotel, Whitworth Locke down on Princess Street certainly looks stunning, a space that will hit you in the face with “cool” as soon as you walk into their conservatory bar and reception area. Bright, simple and with chic Scandi design, this place is an Instagram dream, and also perfect for you and your doggy. They welcome all dogs into their apartments for a one-off fee, which includes dog bowls, doggie treats, a dog towel and an extra thorough deep clean on check out.

Leven

The new kid on the block in Manchester, Leven opened this year on the corner of Chorlton Street and Canal Street, and have certainly impressed so far with their design-led rooms, impressive arts and events programme and, of course, their dog-friendly credentials. One of Leven’s strongest feathers in its cap is its location, slap-bang right in the middle of the city’s Gay Village, so you’re never more than a couple of minutes’ walk from everything that Manchester can offer.
