The theme for this year’s Design Manchester festival is DISRUPT, celebrating the noise-makers, the pioneers, the inspiring creators and disrupters from all fields.
Continuing that theme, the festival’s opening and closing events chart the history of two wildly different disrupters in the entertainment industry, both famed for their spectacular parties.
WHP x DM18 Opening Party
Tuesday 9th October @ PLY
Design Manchester & The Warehouse Project join forces to open this year’s edition of the festival with a launch party and preview of the iconic nightclub series’ End of Store Street exhibition, curated by the original Warehouse Project photographer Sebastian Matthes and designer Paul Hemmingfield.
The evening event, taking place at PLY in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, will feature a Q&A hosted by Crack Magazine, looking at creative highlights from WHP history; the impact the iconic design and photography have had on the development of The Warehouse Project’s brand and public image; plus the creative philosophy behind the company.
The discussion will touch on some of the legendary nights from WHP history, while also looking to the future, after ten years at the infamous Store Street venue and twelve years making its mark on the city of Manchester.
The party will be soundtracked by original WHP residents Krysko & Greg, as well as WHP resident Will Tramp
The Warehouse Project & Design Manchester present… End Of Store Street exhibition will show at PLY from Wed Oct 10 to Sun Nov 4th, 2018. Usual opening times.

DM18 x Lost in Vagueness: Film Screening and DM18 Festival Closing Party
Saturday 20th October @ The Refuge Basement
The theme for Design Manchester’s 2018 Festival is DISRUPT. With a strong focus on protest art and art in politics, DM18 invited disruptors from all fields to share their stories, creativity and design, whilst we look anew at our own creative paths in the face of a gloomy mediated future.
What better partner for the closing screening and party than Lost in Vagueness, a film charting the emergence of Glastonbury Festival’s most iconic and anarchic sideshow attraction and its ingenious but occasionally self-destructive creator Roy Gurvitz.
The debut feature film from director Sofia Olins traces Roy’s story through his emergence from a group of new age travellers who made Glastonbury a stomping ground in the eighties, to anarchic impresario, and on to a troubled creative force struggling to belong in a changing world.
A post-film chat with director Sofia Olins and guests will discuss their own experiences of Lost Vagueness, the importance of art in protest, and how art and entertainment can challenge people in politics and play.
From 8 pm the DM18 x Lost in Vagueness Closing party begins, with DJs, performers and special guests from the subversive days of Lost Vagueness.
