To celebrate the third anniversary of their webzine, the gals of For Books’ Sake are having a makeover. Oh, not the curlers and lip-gloss type – but a slick new look and structural redesign, “live” this week on the popular website. The revamped site promises a smoother user experience that will enable FBS’s growing number of devoted fans to browse reviews, find events and shop for titles from their favourite women authors with ease.
It’s been a dramatic year, for feminism and for For Books’ Sake, who have been busy as ever promoting women authors and calling for equal treatment from media outlets and publishing companies.
In the past year, FBS has been on the bill at festivals, conferences and other events across the UK, featured in print, online and on TV and radio. Its readers and supporters have doubled in number, many connecting via social media or attending one of FBS’s events including workshops, panel discussions and author readings. In May, FBS was proud to publish its second anthology, Derby Shorts, in conjunction with the London Rollergirls, the largest, longest-running roller derby league in the UK. But as for slowing down in Year Four, founder Jane Bradley says that’s impossible. There’s still so much work to do.
“The past three years of For Books’ Sake have been a blast, and it’s been an honour to work with so many incredible iconic and emerging women writers,” said For Books’ Sake founder and director Jane Bradley. “But while women authors continue to be marginalised by the mainstream media, there’s more work to be done, and in our fourth year we’ll be bigger, better and louder than ever. We’ll be continuing to champion women writers and campaign for change – while bringing our readers the very best in book reviews, features and news.”
For Books’ Sake’s new design is more streamlined and user-friendly, with better share and search functionality, along with new features like the events calendar which will allow readers to find exciting literary and feminism-focused events in their local area, as well as allowing authors, publishers and promoters to share their events with a wider audience.
This autumn, FBS will unveil an exciting campaign aimed at improving gender equality in the London Review of Books. They’ll also be releasing fresh new podcasts and announcing their ‘FBS class of 2013’ – this year’s inductees into the FBS favourites Hall of Fame.
