Buy Art Fair
Now renowned as one of the UK’s visual art fairs, Buy Art is most certainly the largest of its kind in the North of England. Over the weekend, over 300,000 artworks will be displayed from famous names such as Banksy, Tracey Emin, Barbara Hepworth, Damien Hirst and Yoko Ono.In addition, the fair will also showcase a plethora of contemporary art which will be for sale alongside a programme of talks, lectures and events throughout the city.
Tape
I guarantee this will be the most fun you’ve ever have without shoes on. Award-winning artists Numen/For Use have transformed the 1830 Warehouse at The Museum of Science and Industry, Castlefield into a giant spider’s web made from sticky tape. And yes, you can play in it for five whole minutes.
Fred Aldous
Possible the city’s most famous Art supply shop and for good reason. It’s amazing. The Northern Quarter store has been selling art and craft products for almost 130 years. Get your paws on anything you could possibly dream of. From presents to handmade cards, to gouache, to glue, to face paint to fabric (… I could go on.)
Hetian Patel at Manchester Art Gallery
Bolton born artist Patel mixes humour and popular culture in domestic settings in his work. His work The Jump (2015) is currently on display at the MAG, which is made up of a homemade, life-size replica of Spiderman in a jumping position in the juxtaposed setting of his family home. The exhibition also showcases a new work entitled ‘Don’t Look at the Finger’- presents a wedding ceremony where bodies speak physically, where the protagonists connect through stylised combat and signed language. Well worth a visit.
Whitworth Concerts
This one might be a long shot for some people, but what a fantastic way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon. These events occur every Sunday in the main hall of the Whitworth Art Gallery which showcases a range of live music amongst the art.
I had the pleasure of seeing the Tempest Chamber Orchestra from the Royal College of Music last week, which was sublime. The concerts are nice and short and so they are ideal for someone who wants to dip their toe in the classical music pond.
