This week has been a belter – not only have I managed to sort out the weird smell coming from my kitchen but it also kicked off with a fantastic evening at Albert Hall at La Discoteque. Hopefully it will be back in Manchester again soon, but in the meantime there’s still plenty of stuff going on over the next seven days – check it out…
The Crucible @ Opera House
Starts Monday 8th May
There’s loads of people whose only experience of The Crucible is from being forced to read it and write essays about it while in Year 8 and as such probably absolutely hate it now. Which is a shame really because Arthur Miller’s seminal 50’s allegory on the Cold War McCarthyism occurring in the States is just as relevant today as it was then. A disturbing story about the partially fictionalized condemnation of women as witches in colonial Salem, you should expect a chilling example of the dangers of paranoia and power, and the ambiguity of morality itself.
Tickets start at £13.75

Make A Scene – The Victoria Wood A Thon!
Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th May
The good people over at Make a Scene are once again producing a brilliant show this weekend, and this one revolves around comedienne-legend Victoria Wood. It’s been over a year since she sadly passed away and in celebration of her life and laughs Make a Scene will be screening all of her best sketches, songs and stand up as well as a full showing of An Audience with Victoria Wood and Acorn Antiques. On top of this you can also expect a mental collection of Victoria Wood games, live sketches, and karaoke complete with Milk Jam providing the cakes and treats to keep the blood sugar levels up. It’s raising money for Jessie’s Fund which is a charity aiming to help hospitalised children get access to musical instruments – so you can’t really argue with that. Tickets are getting limited so get involved fast.
Showings are 3.30pm & 7.30pm on Saturday and 6pm Sunday
Tickets are £10 from here

It’s the first Friday of the month and that means it’s another opportunity to pile your hard earned cash into a true Manchester institution – the Smiths Disco at The Star and Garter. As usual you can expect plenty of Smiths and Morrissey tunes spread over the two floors, as well as some lovely and cheap drinks. The night has been going since 1994 and as such is pretty much always packed to the rafters – basically, get there early doors. It starts at 9pm so get there around then and you’re in for a top, true Manchester night.

Manford’s Comedy Club

For all of our readers in Altrincham who are seemingly not content with a brilliant market and two top-notch Belgian bars, you are also getting some great live comedy courtesy of Jason Manford too. Manford’s Comedy Club will be heading to the Garrick Theatre on Thursday and for the sum of 15 British pounds you can see 4 acts that have been personally picked by Jason himself. Holy Crab Kitchen Takeover @ Common
Monday 8th May 2017, 7pm
I’ve always stated my dislike for seafood – in fact it seems to be all I talk about nowadays. Unless it is a Fish Finger by that bearded Captain geezer or a bit of Salmon on a Sunday then I’m not interested. There are literally dozens of people out there who enjoy it though and if you do you should consider getting down to Common this Monday when Holy Crab take over their kitchen and start doling out the fish. Or crustaceans. The menu consists of plenty of sea dwelling monstrosities including 3 Oysters (£6), Crab Balls (£6) Squid Fries (£6) and Sweet & Salty Crab Fritters (obviously £6 too). Best grab yourself a ticket here when you can, and I sincerely hope you enjoy yourself. Honest.
