It’s said that time flies when you’re having fun, and that’s exactly how it feels for KERB – the natural wine bar that, over the past year, has become a cornerstone of the Ancoats community.

This weekend, the bar will celebrate a whole 12 months of natural wine, exclusive events and innovation, as it hosts DJs, an art exhibition and, of course, its current favourite pours to commemorate its first anniversary in the district.

Kicking off on Friday evening, Manchester-based DJ Bobo aka European Bob will take over the decks inside the venue, providing an evening of chest rattling bass intelligence, alongside a range of specialist wine from the likes of winemaker, Tim Wildman, the Brand Brothers and Zudugarai.

Saturday and Sunday will continue the laid-back vibe KERB is most well-known for, as it continues to pour glasses of exclusive wines whilst guests are invited to view the ongoing photography exhibition in the bar by Madeleine Penfold

Her photography explores the origins and legacy of the word ‘queer’. Speaking of the exhibition, she said: “For years, the word ‘queer’ was used to dehumanise us, but as the world changes, so are we. We have reclaimed the word and used it to empower ourselves and our identity.

“Queer is not the first word of its kind to be reclaimed in history. This word challenges the sexual binary and gender identity. It is fuelled by different emotions, attractions and expressions.”

Madeleine has built the exhibition on images she has captured of queer people from around the world through, images that have evoked raw emotions, history and narrative. Everything from modern-day football culture to queer community spaces make up the exhibition that fits in nicely to KERB’s welcoming, inclusive space.

KERB first opened its doors last August as a project from the teams behind Takk Coffee, SEESAW creative hub, and ÖL Bar & Brewery. The bar is built upon a community of natural wine lovers that work to break down any preconceived notions people may have about wine.
