A public consultation has been launched on the proposed redevelopment of the iconic and very popular Bury market, which been at the heart of the town centre since the late 1960s.

The much-loved market has housed a number of local Bury businesses for over 50 years. Stalls selling Bury’s famous black pudding sit alongside those selling Turkish gozleme, chippies and greasy spoon cafes. Famously vast the market also incorporates, amongst many other things, clothing and homeware stalls, baby-wear stalls, pet food stalls, stalls selling sports equipment, fresh fruit and veg stalls, butchers and fishmongers laden with, amongst other things, spanking fresh oysters. It’s an institution and was voted Britain’s Favourite Market in both 2019 and 2022.

The new plans include

  • an oversailing canopy to cover the existing outdoor market
  • a flexi-hall event space to support the town’s education and cultural activities
  • enhanced public spaces with greenery and better signage in the surrounding area

Designed by Just H Architects, the redevelopment of the markets form part of Bury Council’s wider town centre regeneration plans, which also feature new plans for Mill Gate Shopping Centre in partnership with Bruntwood

As well as this, the council is planning an extensive brownfield development across Radcliffe and Bury, alongside a new and improved transport interchange.

Speaking to Place North West, leader of Bury Council Eamonn O’Brien, said: “The plans for Bury Market are a key part of our unprecedented investment into transforming the town centre. Using council money, plus £20m we won from the government’s Levelling Up Fund, we aim to secure a thriving future for our much-loved market.”

The council has launched a public consultation on the proposed redevelopment project, which is open now and will run until Sunday 29 January. The local community is being encouraged to attend to help shape the plans further and have their say in the development.

Drop in events are also taking place at Bury Indoor Market entrance foyer, between 10am – 2pm on:

    • Wednesday 18 January
    • Saturday 21 January
    • Friday 27 January

These sessions will include design information, as well as opportunities to speak to the project team and to leave any thoughts and comments regarding the redevelopment of Bury Market.

A planning application for the scheme is expected later this year.
